A brilliant book which follows the author and his rag tag team as they go through the highs and lows of the catering industry. Chris Nye, the author of the memoir and owner of the diner in question perfectly captures the spirit of the town as he depicts the troubles he had in getting his dream project, an American style Diner, from conception to operation in a small Sussex town that didn't yet have a McDonalds. He now lives in Brighton, where he works as a freelance journalist (well, okay, as a mini-cab driver). Well it's not *that* funny, but it is amusing and kept me entertained over several sittings, without ever quite explaining why you would swap the fleshpots of Brighton for 7 years serving burgers to the good burghers of Uckfield. The service was great and my kids were given a lollipop each as we left which was a well received gesture.

In some cases, the local authority may decide that they cannot do so but will let you know this and explain why. It's the characters that frequent the diner that make the book, helping the author to suffer the other slings and arrows that outrageous fortune throws at him. After watching far too many episodes of Diners, Drive throughs and Dives, I have always fancied having a diner. Abandoning his early ambitions to become, first, a Zulu warrior and, second, a diplomat, he settled for a course in catering at Leeds Poly. If I ever think of opening a restaurant, which I occasionally daydream about, I'll pick up this book and think again! His subsequent career ranged from sculpting celery on a Caribbean cruise ship to running the crepe stand on Brighton pier, before he hit on the plan of bringing his unique Diner cuisine to the people of small town Britain, starting out with Uckfield. on a Friday night, flexing their tattoos after they9ve been thrown out of the pub; how to avoid paying VAT on a Big Max and fries; and why you should never, ever, hire an Elvis impersonator on the cheap. Aside from the business angle, this was also a solid observation of small town England at the turn of the twentieth century - the people who live and work there, the businesses that come and go, the increasing urbanization and alienation of one type of community while another grows alongside and within it. meal, unlike other local take aways and including the Dominos which put us off Dominos pizza for good!

Christopher Nye slips gems into every paragraph, evokes laughter and sudden chuckling, the characters are so real even the rogues are loveable. Simon lent him part of the lease of Maximum Diner and is happy to support any promotion of this book, not least in the hope of getting his money back. Christopher Nye comes across as a nice, ordinary bloke, and he tells this cautionary tale of the perils of setting up a small food outlet in a charming and humorous way. This is a used book - there is no escaping the fact it has been read by someone else and it will show signs of wear and previous use. The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal.

Christopher is the younger brother of Simon Nye, creator of the hit comedy series, 'Men Behaving Badly.
