Description

With a 5x range of 28-140mm it has one of the longest zooms of any waterproof camera and will get you a fair bit closer to the action than the 100mm TOUGH TG-6 or the 90mm COOLPIX W150.

The real estate at the back of the FujifilmFinepix XP140 is meanwhile largely swallowed up by its 3-inch, 920K dot resolution LCD screen, which occupies two thirds of the left hand side in the absence of any optical or electronic viewfinder, the inclusion of which, to be honest, would always feel like unnecessary window dressing anyway on a camera of this size. Capture your adventure: the best-selling Fujifilm XP series evolves further with the launch of the new XP140. There's a small playback button to view your images and a 4-way controller which also allows quick access to a function of your choice, flash settings, self timer settings, exposure compensation and the ability to delete images. One other thing to note here, the specification will tell you the Finepix XP140 close focusing distance is 9cm, but in practice I got much closer than that – around 4cm. In addition to improved waterproofing which adds 5 metres to the depth of the older model, the headline feature is a new 4K video mode. If the item comes direct from a manufacturer, it may be delivered in non-retail packaging, such as a plain or unprinted box or plastic bag. Though we found there was some loss of definition at the very edges of frame when shooting at maximum 28mm equivalent wide angle setting and some loss of highlight detail (and visibility of pixel fringing) under particularly bright conditions (where an manual option is to simply dial the exposure compensation down), under most circumstances we found the images from the Fujifilm XP140 to be rather better than we expected from a camera of this ilk. So a very straightforward and intuitive camera in terms of layout then, and one on which you won't have to hunt around to find the settings to get it to do exactly what you want.

By signing up you agree with this and confirm that you are over 13 years of age, or have the consent of a parent or guardian.

You can also choose from Toy camera, Miniature, Pop colour, High-key, Low-key, Dynamic Tone, Fish-eye, Soft-focus, Cross Screen, Sketch and a variety of partial colour effects. The Fujifilm XP140 has the same solid set of core features as the previous models with a few handy improvements. A rotating lock mechanism on the battery and memory card door should ensure that no water gets into the only point of entry, and it feels nicely secure.

Dynamic tone and miniature options – whereby the top and bottom of frame are blurred for effect – are also fun. Fujifilm’s years of experience are reflected with its colour reproduction technology, which ensures beautiful colours in all conditions. Reproduction in whole or part in any form or medium without specific written permission is prohibited. More usefully it has 1080 and 720 modes at 50 and 24fps as well as unusual square modes at 1080×1080 and 720×720. That, of course, is something all cameras suffer from, but the XP140 is worse in this respect than the TOUGH TG-6, which has a 3 inch slightly more detailed 1040k dot screen and the smaller, lower resolution screen on the COOLPIX W150.All content, design, and layout are Copyright © 1998–2024 Digital Photography Review All Rights Reserved. This product has been thoroughly tested by our team of photographers and we are happy to give a 6 month warranty as a result. Its picture quality is good, albeit not as good as the more expensive Olympus TOUGH TG-6, and it has a wide range of video modes – though its new 4K/15p mode is a bit of a let down. On the top, there's a large, textured shutter button and next to this you'll find the on/off button and a dedicated video recording button. It’s not always clear how this affects settings changes, but you can turn it off if you think it’s doing something wrong.
