They even go so far as to including a genuine leather pull tab to remove the top panel, and a Kensington lock to lock the side and top panels in place. But maybe the sandwiched design like in the Terra is fundamentally flawed because the heat seems to be concentrating right between where the GPU and CPU are placed, and there's nothing available to increase airflow right in that area. The central spine runs from front-to-back inside the case and can be adjusted left to right by 30mm to allow for more room either on the GPU or CPU side. The ID-Cooling IS-55 cooler I use on this test system has a 57mm height, so I set this to position 5.

With the chassis configured like this, I was easily able to fit a 4080 Founders Edition in the GPU chamber. For cooling, the Terra doesn’t come with any fans, and the manual only shows an optional step for mounting a single 120mm fan in the bottom under the PSU -- but that’s not possible with an SFX-L PSU. As we’re just restarting our ITX case testing, the Terra will be the one to start re-building our database -- but the experience from over a decade of case reviews all carries over here, just with renewed focus on trying to identify “pain-in-the-ass factor” aspects of the build process. It’s attractive, exceedingly well built, and performs far better than a chassis this small has any right to.Remember that the PSU can eat more heat this way -- they can take it, but the cheapest ones could have shortened life. In our testing, it was best to minimize the space on the GPU side to cut down on warm air recirculation. Do I need to downgrade the components, or go with a completely new case with better thermals if I want to keep what I have?

I was unable to determine if this panel is plastic, or if there was some other reason for the color variation. The manual is mostly good: It shows example configurations and major component clearances, although we don’t like its representation of how tightly folded the GPU power cable is. For materials, the aluminum exterior looks and feels high-end on this model, although the black version of the case that we saw at Computex seems like a future fingerprint and scuff problem.Aside from the color variation of the top panel, my first impressions of the Terra were extremely positive with the fit and finish being top tier.

While the other half would flow across the GPU, you wouldn’t really see any meaningful temperature differences, plus you would lose a large portion of the cable management space this case provides. The vents should continue lower down the panel, but we think Fractal did this so that the end of the vents visually line up with the top of the wood on the front panel. A large part of the point of ITX is to fit the most in the least, and so standardizing cooler selection would mean limiting how useful -- for example -- the "H2O" aspect of the DAN Case A4-H2O is if we were to use a downdraft cooler.
