Set in the near future, global warming has caused the Earth's sea levels to rise and flood the coastal nations around the world.

The doom that prevails is beautifully crafted as is the glimmer of hope that pulls us through the book with its magnetism. His first book, Floodland, was published by Orion in 2000, and won the Branford-Boase award for best debut children's novel. Floodland is an extraordinary novel, set some time in the not too distant future in a land that has been reclaimed by the sea.She is fortunate to uncover a small rowboat submerged in the mud, and fixes it up so she can escape her town and find her parents. It was a good debut novella but I believe it suffered from the length and the ideas could have been developed further. Ten-year-old Zoe Black was left behind on Norwich by accident when her parents escaped in the last supply ship to visit the island. He is the author of several books, including Witch Hill and The Book of Dead Days, both of which were nominated for the Edgar Allan Poe Award.

The language in the book is simple to read but very descriptive, using lots of metaphors and personification. Zoe as a character was fleshed out enough to get a sense of her goals and motivations but I didn't really identify with her. This book was the winner of the Branford Boase Award 2001 and marked the start of author Marcus Sedgwick's multi-award-winning career. Alone and desperate among marauding gangs, she manages to dig a derelict boat out of the mud and get away to Eels Island. Floodland is a children's fantasy novel by Marcus Sedgwick, published on 2 March 2000 by Orion Children's Books.

For my opinion, the ending of the book was a little disappointing, because it ended like on the middle of the story. Set in the near future on the east coast of England that has been reclaimed by the sea it tells the story of a girl who, having been mistakenly left behind by her parents escaping from the flood, she heads off to find them but ends up in the hands of a mob of nasty men on a small island. I am using this book as the basis for a unit of work on placement and very excited to see how the children's work turns out.

I encourage readers to start exploring the climate fiction genre more, but not necessarily with this title. She fetches up on the remote and sinking Eels Island where there is a barbarous community, and to find out whether she ever gets off Eels Island and whether she ever finds her parents again you will have to read the book. He has illustrated some of his books, and has provided wood-engravings for a couple of private press books.
