And this release represents the Deftones proving that their talent is more humble and runs far deeper than just the style they create. So many nu-metal bands went garish and over the top with their covers — the simplicity of this one makes it such a standout. Watch the video for Crosses’ new single Invisible Hand, taken from their upcoming 15-song album Goodnight, God Bless, I Love U, Delete. One of the factors that their fans point out is the lack of anthemic grandeur that album covers like White Pony had. Across the LP's 12 cuts, frontman Jonathan Davis unloads the pent-up demons he'd been carrying since his traumatic childhood, and the artwork — which pictures a young girl on the brink of losing her innocence to a foreboding beast of a man — perfectly complements the album's harrowing tellings of abuse and emotional torment. In particular, copies of the images could not be used to make illegal copies of the album artwork on another sound carrier. On a nerdier level, the showcase of their canine mascot draws a direct comparison to Lou Dog, the Dalmation owned by the late Sublime singer Bradley Nowell — that band was clearly an influence on the reggae-inflected, Cali-punk-adjacent nu-metal that Snot excelled in. in substitution for Chi Cheng, who was seriously injured in an automobile accident in Santa Clara, California on November 4, 2008. Frontman David Draiman has reportedly described it as showing the birth of a ferocious monster emerging from a woman's vagina — perhaps a physical manifestation of "the sickness" itself. The album was a major departure from the band's earlier sound, incorporating elements of trip-hop and shoegaze into their signature metal style. Showing resiliency, Deftones continue to make music that is both heavy and beautiful, and their legacy is secure as one of the most influential bands in rock history.

Her name is Lisa Hughes, and 20 years after the album came out, Pousta tracked her down and interviewed her a little bit about the album cover. Snot's Get Some cover would've been memorable even if it wasn't tinged with the tragedy: Frontman Lynn Strait died a little over a year after the album's release in a car crash alongside his loyal pal, Dobbs, the doggie de resistance. In addition to their musical innovations, Deftones also helped to define the look of nu-metal, with their dark and edgy aesthetic providing inspiration for many other bands in the genre. He says that part of the reason his collaboration with the band has been so productive is that, because of their long shared history, they can often communicate in a sort of aesthetic shorthand: using a communal repertoire of images, moments, or artwork to discuss their newest work, allows for something effortless and generative.

Given all the teasing they’ve been doing lately, this is not much of a surprise… but it’s still exciting!
