She loves yoga, jazz music and, like her friend Lindsay Boxer, loves to read travel books and mysteries—she's even a member of a book club. Century was founded in 1981 and immediately established itself as an exceptionally dynamic publisher of bestselling authors, a tradition continued to this day. Four crime-solving friends face off against a killer in San Francisco in the Women's Murder Club novel that launched James Patterson's thrilling series. I’m aware that this is a part of a series but equally I should’ve been made to feel like I was part of ‘the gang’.

Among his creations are some of the world's most popular series including Alex Cross, the Women's Murder Club, Michael Bennett and the Private novels.

Claire Washburn, San Francisco’s Chief Medical Examiner who is tasked with working on Blackouts latest victims. As the title indicates, this is the 23rd installment in the Women’s Murder Club series, which shows not only the persistence of the authors but also their uncanny ability to keep churning out interesting stories featuring these dynamic characters. Our 23rd installment sees Cindy head off on her book tour, her true crime book on Evan Burke has hit the bestsellers listed gained the attention of a copycat killer. Days to Live: A CIA-agent bride is on her European honeymoon when she and her husband are poisoned—leaving her seventy-two hours to take revenge (with Duane Swierczynski).

This is a tale of dark obsession which is told in a straightforward, no nonsense fashion at a quick pace which makes for an easy and entertaining read. As the opening promises this is one for the fans of the Women’s Murder Club and it certainly delivers on that promise.

The novel has the characteristic short chapters, fuss-free writing, fast pace and high drama crime solving. It is only when Cindy is kidnapped by Blackout that Boxer and the SFPD realise just how serious things are getting. Together, they solve crimes in their home city of San Francisco, and often meet up to talk about clues and life over Mexican food and drinks at Susie's. Maxine Paetro is a novelist who has collaborated with James Patterson on the bestselling Women’s Murder Club, Private, and Confessions series; Woman of God; and other stand-alone novels.

When Blackout confronts Cindy, the plot really heats up, and there is much suspense around the possibility that she might not make it out of this situation alive. All four Murder Club members appear in this 23rd instalment and they all play a part in the plot (which has been missing for quite a few recent publications in the series). All the while, fellow Murder Club vet, Yuki Castellano is, in court, working on a case with its own dire consequences.

On a personal level, I must admit that his Women’s Murder Club series – focused on the professional and personal lives of four women in San Francisco - has been very hit and miss over the last couple of years with more weak outings than not. While Lindsey and the crew are chasing the elusive killer, Cindy disappears, now everyone realizes that they are working against the clock to stop a madman and find Cindy before she becomes his next victim. With the novel moving along at a nice pace, I was initially distracted by this storyline until Patterson and Paetro brilliantly tie it together with the Blackout narrative. Jack discovers another murder in Moscow that appears to be linked, sinking his deeper and deeper into a conspiracy that could have global consequences. A man is accused of depriving his wife of the necessities of life after chaining her up in the basement of their home.

While Yuki is sure that this is a slam dunk, the accused tells a story of depravity committed against him and how he was out of his head. The bestselling 8th novel in the Women’s Murder Club seriesA MASSACRE OF ELITESBehind the closed doors of San Francisco's grandest mansions, beautiful people party the nights away in a hedonistic haze of money, drugs, drink and sex. She is on a book tour when she realizes she is being followed by someone who is killing at each stop on her tour. THE 23rd MIDNIGHT by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro kicks off with an intense sequence of events and never lets up.
